校训：明德(Virtue)、博学(Erudition)、尚美(Beauty)、拓新(Innovation)

　　明德Virtue

　　校训第一条“明德”，语出《大学》：“大学之道在明明德，在亲民，在止于至善。”“明德”就是指“明明德”。第一个“明”作动词使用，第二个作形容词用。要彰显我们每个人与生俱来的光明磊落的德性，使其不受私欲的蒙蔽。

　　用“明德”作为校训的第一条，寓意我校的办学理念——育人为本，德育为先。对学校而言，德为育人之本；对学子而言，德为成人之本。治校之明德，既要法治，更要德治。教师之明德，是学高为师，德高为范。员工之明德，在于敬业爱岗、服务育人。学生之明德，在于懂得成才必先成人，成为一个大写的人、舒展的人、睿智的人、和谐发展的人、充满创造精神的人。

　　The first aspect of the school’s motto is “advocating the virtues”, which is from The Great Learning: “The tenet of university is to carry forward the virtue of being open and aboveboard, and to also make people reject the old for the new and reach the perfect state”. In this context, “Advocating the virtues” (ming ming de in Chinese) refers to “manifest the virtue of being open and aboveboard”. The first “ming” is used as a verb, while the second is used as an adjective. It means to highlight our moral character of being open and straightforward and to also prevent us from being deceived by selfish desire.

　　In the first aspect of the school motto, “advocating the virtues” refers to the school-running ideas of our school -- focusing on educating people and also giving priority to moral education. To the school, morality is the foundation for educating students; to the students, morality is the foundation for them to achieve self-development. The virtue of school management is to abide by laws and virtues of the school. The virtue of teachers is that a man of virtue can be a teacher and a learned man can be a paragon. The virtue of employees is to respect and love their own post and job, as well as to also educate people. The virtue of students is that they should understand that they need to be great, poised, wise, harmonious and creative before they can become useful people.

　　博学Erudition

　　自古以来，博学都是读书人给自己提出的最基本要求。《礼记·中庸》十九章曰：“博学之，审问之，慎思之，明辨之，笃行之。”学习分为五个递进的阶段，博学是起始，意谓学习首先要广泛地猎取，培养充沛而旺盛的好奇心。博还意味着博大和宽容，惟有博大与宽容，才能兼容并包，使学习者能够具有世界眼光和开放胸襟，真正做到“海纳百川，有容乃大”。

　　Since the ancient times, erudition has been the most basic requirement that Chinese scholars put forward on themselves. As said in Chapter 19 of the Book of Rites · The Doctrine of Mean, “Learn extensively, investigate problems thoroughly, make careful reflection, make clear discrimination and practice earnestly”. Thus, learning is divided into five progressive stages. Extensive learning is the beginning, which means that the first aspect of learning is to learn extensively and cultivate abundant and vigorous curiosity. The word “extensiveness” also means being broad and tolerant. Only being broad and tolerant can help absorb anything and everything, and can also bring a world vision and an open mind to learners, in order to make them truly be “all-inclusive”.

　　尚美Beauty

　　子曰：“里仁为美。”美是“人类内心情感愉悦之美”与“外部形式之美”的和谐统一，它既是艺术之美的最高境界与追求目标，也包含心灵之美、道德之美和情操之美。“以美启真，崇美于心，尚美于行。”“尚美”既是指对艺术之美以及心灵、道德、情操之美的崇尚、追求。也是要求学生具有崇尚美的心灵，就是要有正确的审美观念和高尚的审美情趣，把自然美、社会美、艺术美内化为人生修养，师生共同保持积极向上、奋发有为的精神境界。

　　Confucius said: “It is best to be benevolent”. Beauty is the harmonious integration of the “beauty of human inner feelings” and the “beauty of the external form”. It is not only the highest state and pursuit of the beauty of art, but also includes the beauty of mind, the beauty of morality and the beauty of sentiment. “Inspire truth with beauty, admire beauty in the mind and advocate beauty in action.” In this context, “advocating beauty” not only refers to the advocacy and pursuit of the beauty of art and the beauty of the mind, morality and sentiment, but it also requires students to have the mind of advocating beauty, such as having the correct esthetic idea and noble esthetic interest, the ability of transforming natural beauty, social beauty and artistic beauty into the accomplishment of life, as well as the spiritual realm where both teachers and students maintain a mental state of being positive, aiming high and working hard.

　　拓新Innovation

　　“敢为人先，勇于创造，当求真理，乐在拓新。”“拓新”，意为开拓、创新，不断进取。开拓，是一种精神，是一种勇气。拥有这种精神和勇气的人，能够事事争先，不落人后，敢为天下先。创新，是一种追求，也是一种能力。一个具有创新能力的民族是一个伟大的民族，一个努力追求创新的人是一个不可战胜的人。

　　“Dare to be the first, have the courage to create, work hard in order to seek the truth and take pleasure in innovation.” “Innovation” means blazing new trails in a pioneering spirit and continually moving on. To open up is a kind of spirit and a kind of courage. The people who have the spirit and courage are able to do everything best, they are unwilling to yield to others and they dare to be the first. Innovation is a pursuit and a kind of ability. A nation with the ability to innovate is great and a man who works hard for innovation is invincible.
